The Name Block Island
Fun facts about the NAME of the island!
Manisses, was the first known name by the indians which means "Little God" or "Little God's Island".
Claudia secondly, from Verrazano the explorer in 1524 in honor of the mother of King Francis' I.
Soon after 1614 it was "Adrians Eyland" on Dutch maps....finally to become virtually the same name of Block Island in 1876.
Adrian Block, a Dutch Explorer and trader came upon her shores and in 1614 and decided to name the isalnd after himself.....I would have too.....It would have been "Mulshine Island" LOL.
New Shoreham came later, in 1672, when the island received its town charter from the state of Rhode Island.
The shores of the the New World were here associated with those of the Old, the final syllable, "ham", signifying a house, or farm, or village, had reference too "many parts" of names that terminate with ham.
Alrighty than....have a good night all!

Moving into the Fall on BI
Summer has flown by and now we are moving into the Fall! The last flowers are blooming, the air is cool, the crowded bustling downtown has disappeared and most of the boats have gone back home for the winter.
People have said their farewells and created their newest "Summer of 2013" memories. Whether it was your first summer or 40th, if you love Block Island or have just met and fell captive to her beauty and magic she will be in your soul and on your mind no matter what time of year or where you are in the world <3
I have been coming here for 36 years and now am living here year round! I have the best memories of my life here and I love Block Island with my heart and soul! I am creating this blog to take you through my first whole winter, well since 1987 when I almost made it. Haha I ended up leaving in Febuary so I was close but now I'm IN.......
I will post pictures and talk about what's going on with anything and everything so all can feel connected. Life is so busy and crazy that this blog can be a place to come to and refresh your day with thoughts of the island and make you smile.
This summer my 24 year old stepson made a comment....he had never been to New England nor heard of Block Island before and came from Texas. He was in awe and said, "There's now way this place is part of the United States!" He can't wait to come back!
Anyway have a beautiful day and spread the magic of The Block wherever you go! We all are blessed that we know this place - we are only a special few in the world :)
